Intercontinental Cup 2010: Final Standings, Awards, All-Stars

IBAF President Riccardo Fraccari hands out the medals to Cuba after their 11th ICC Title

Following the conclusion of the championship game between Cuba and the Netherlands, the organizers also handed out the individual awards and named the all-star for the 2010 Intercontinental Cup in Taichung, Taiwan. Thanks to the success of the Netherlands (Silver), Italy (Bronze) and the Czech Republic (8th), Europe was well represented during the ceremonies.

Mariekson Gregorius (NED) of the Cincinnati Reds got the trophy as the best defensive player of the tournament. Gregorius at shortstop, catcher Juan Pablo Angrisano (ITA) and Curt Smith (NED) at first base were named to the All-Star team, which is led by five players of ICC Champion Cuba. The most important awards went to Hector Olivera (CUB), who received MVP and Best Batter honors, and Wei-Lun Pan (TPE), who was named Best Pitcher.

As usual the organizers made their choices before the finals, which left championship game winner Miguel Gonzalez (CUB), who didn’t allow a run in 14 innings, while issuing just five hits and five walks in two starts, without the deserving award for the best pitcher. The early decision also put Yadier Pedroso (CUB) onto the all-star team despite allowing three hits, a run and a walk without a registering an out in the top of the ninth in the final.
