After three low-scoring games on the second day of play at Honkbal Week Haarlem, the trend continued in the opener, with the International Globetrotters and Italy playing things close, before the Netherlands and Curaçao showed off some offensive firepower in their victories.
Italy 3 – Globetrotters 1
In the morning game, Jhorjan Guevara, Noel González, and Renzo Martini knocked three consecutive singles to make the game 3-0 Italy in the third. Mattia Aldegheri threw six shutout innings before running into trouble in the seventh, but the Globetrotters could score only one. Nando Mostaert had his second hit of the day for the all-stars in the ninth, but closer Alex Bassani preserved the win for the Azzurri.
Netherlands 15 – Taiwan 4
A day after a loss against Italy, the Kingdom of the Netherlands took revenge with an impressive victory over the Asian representative at the Honbal Week Haarlem. Shervyen Newton and Delano Selassa both homered, while Darryl Collins bashed a three-run double. In the second, rightfielder Dayton Biegel threw out a runner at home and then snared a line drive headed for extra bases with a diving catch. Min-Sih Chen homered for the second day in a row for Taiwan.
According to Marco Stoovelaar, the victory was the 50th in 85 head-to-head games against Taiwan.
Curaçao 12 – Czech Republic 2
Curaçao produced four hits in the first three innings, but could not score. That changed in the fourth inning, after a walk for Donovan Anthonia was followed by singles by Sherten Apostel – who was thrown out attempting to stretch – Phildrick Llewellyn, Riordan Windster, Raysheandall Michel, and Darren Seferina to bring in the first two runs. It also left the bases loaded for former Yankees’ prospect Ericson Leonora, who promptly launched a grand slam. In the sixth, Leonora added another RBI, while Dudley Leonora and Anthonia smacked a pair of two-run singles.
