The Bern Cardinals clinched an A-Pool spot in the European Cup for Switzerland in the 2013 tournaments for the first time in the history of European Baseball. This weekend they won the European Cup Playoff against the Montpellier Barracudas in Zurich. After losing on Saturday 2-4, Bern came back on Sunday to win the best-of-three series.
In the decisive third match the Cardinals defeated Montpellier 11-7. Bern scored in six of the first eight innings to out-last the Barracudas. The French club threatened to come back in the ninth, scoring five runs before coming up short. The difference was just too big to overcome.
Seth Suplin homered for the Cards. Four players scored at least twice. Long time Cardinal John Baum went the distance on the mound, accomplishing probably his biggest triumph with the club. Anthony Cros and Guillaume Felices drove in two runs apiece for Montpellier. Andy Pitcher was charged with the loss.
