Press Release Hungarian Baseball and Softball Federation

Obuda Brick Factory and Szentendre Sleepwalkers qualified for the 2009 National Championship Finals

Budapest – Last weekend, the two Budapest teams validated their tickets to the 2009 Hungarian Championship finals. The best of seven series will start with a weekend double header on October 9. All games will be played over nine full innings.

While regular-season champs Obuda Brick Factory cruised through the semi finals by sweeping their rivals Janossomorja Rascals in three games, the Sleepwalkers had a much harder journey.

Szentendre had to play a full five-game series against 5-time national champs Nagykanizsa Ants to qualify for the finals. In a heart breaker in game five on Saturday, the Ants took a 4:3 lead into the bottom of the ninth, when Szentendre finally started getting hot and scored two runs on three consecutive hits.

Szentendre and Obuda are facing each other in the national finals for the second year in a row. Last year’s finals saw a very dominating Obuda team that beat Szentendre in 4:1 games to win their 3rd national championship since 2004.

The reason for this year’s late championship finals is that both team will be playing in various other finals before.

Next weekend, the Sleepwalkers will travel to Zagreb to play in the 2009 Interleague Final Four.

One week later on the weekend October 2-3, Szentendre and Obuda as well as the Division 2 teams Erd Pioneers and Debrecen Tigers will square off for the 2009 Hungarian Cup Championship.
