On Sunday evening Jair Jurrjens (L 10-9) again suffered from lack of run support in a 2-3 loss to the Phillies. He allowed seven hits, three runs (2 ER) and two walks in seven innings, while striking out two. The reigning World Series champion scored against him with a homerun by Chase Utley in the fourth and a two-run double by Carlos Ruiz in the seventh. The Braves only managed two runs on a solo shot by Martin Prado and a RBI single by Chipper Jones. Jurrjens has an ERA of 2.89 for the season.
Around the Majors:
- Right-handed pitcher Rick van den Hurk is coming back into the big leagues. He is among four call-ups by the Florida Marlins today, as rosters in the MLB expand for the last month of the regular season. The 24-year-old already made six starts for the Marlins this season, going 2-2 with an ERA of 5.12. He has a record of 5-2 with an ERA of 2.87 in eleven starts for the Triple-A-team. After playing for the Netherlands in the 2009 World Baseball Classic this March, he had to start the season on the DL with elbow problems.
Around the Minors:
- Russian left-hander Andrei Lobanov hasn’t lost a beat with the Gulf Coast League Twins, giving up just two earned runs on 14 hits and one walk in 22 innings, while striking out 35. However he only made one appearance since August 17.
- After being on the roster for the Gulf Coast League Red Sox without getting any playing time German right-hander Jennell Hudson was assigned to the 7-day disabled list of the Single-A Greenville Drive in the South Atlantic League with an undisclosed injury. Fellow German minor leaguers Donald Lutz and Kai Gronauer still are recovering from hand injuries they suffered in July. Lutz will remain in the United States, while Gronauer is expected to join the German national team for the Baseball World Cup.
