SAN MARINO scored three runs in the top of the tenth inning to defeat the leader in the Italian Baseball League RIMINI 5-2. Last year’s champion loaded the bases with one out in the first extra frame, but TELEMARKET seemed to come out of the jam, forcing Carlos Duran into an infield fly for the second out. But with Martin Vasquez batting, Gustavo Martinez (L) threw a wild pitch to bring David Sheldon home for the leading run. Vasquez walked before Max De Biase followed with a two-run single to seal the victory.
Besides a short offensive outburst in the opening period, the teams exchanged zeros for the rest of the game. SAN MARINO had taken a 2-0 lead on a RBI double by Vasquez and a sac fly by De Biase in the top of the first. But RIMINI countered with a two-run homerun by Danny Gonzalez moments later. Rafael Garcia (RIM) went seven innings, allowing two runs on five hits, while striking out seven. Horacio Estrada (SMA) gave up seven hits, two runs and a walk in 6 1/3 innings. Luis Ramirez picked up the win after 3 2/3 scoreless innings of no-hit relief.

BOLOGNA profited from the loss by RIMINI and cut down on the deficit thanks to a 7-0 shutout against REGGIO EMILIA. Jesus Matos struck out nine in seven scoreless innings, conceding just five hits for the win. Victor Moreno closed it out for the five-hitter with two perfect frames. A three-run triple by Juan Angrisano in a four-run seventh blew the game wide open. Juan Carlos Infante went three-for-five with two runs scored. Richard Austin drove in two. Abe Alvarez issued seven hits, three runs and three bb in 5 2/3 innings for the loss. Liviston Santaniello and Taber Lee collected two hits each for PALFINGER.
