Jurrjens, Martis getting schooled by American League Teams

Posted on June 22, 2009 by philipp

Jair Jurrjens drew the Red Sox in his latest start in the MLB on Sunday and the young Braves starter got a lecture of the World Series Champion of 2004 and 2007. He allowed eight hits, five runs (2 ER, own fielding error) and a walk in 6 1/3 innings, striking out six. The right-hander also hit a batter. He gave up a two-run homerun to .213-hitter David Ortiz in the first, sac flies to Jason Bay and George Kottaras and a RBI single to J.D. Drew.  Jurrjens threw 69 of his 109 pitches for strikes. Thanks to the three unearned runs his ERA didn’t change much and stands at 2.89. He received the no decision, as Atlanta was able to come back late in the game. However Boston won anyway, as Nick Green send the first offering of Jeff Bennett in the bottom of the ninth over the fence in right field for a walk-off homerun.

Shairon Martis (L 5-2) faced the Blue Jays on Sunday and got hit hard too. The Nationals right-hander lost for the second time this season, allowing eight hits, six runs and two walks in five innings. All six runs came in the first three frames. Lyle Overbay led Toronto with a homerun and five RBI to an easy 9-4 win. It was the first loss for Washington after four straight wins. Martis’ ERA jumped back over the 5.00 mark and rose to 5.13.
