Recaps: Mannheim Tornados pick up important Wins in Mainz

Posted on May 11, 2009 by philipp

Dortmund Wanderers vs. Solingen Alligators

North

HSV Stealers – Bonn Capitals 6-4, 6-3

The STEALERS swept their doubleheader against the CAPITALS and improved their record to 6-6, which ties them for third place in the standings. In game one they put five runs on the board in the third and fourth en route to a 6-4 win. Michael Kujoth and Alex Harms had the RBIs to put them up in front. In the second match two-run doubles by Kody Hightower and Gordon Shaw put the HSV 5-2 ahead after the opening frame. They held on to the three-run lead and won 6-3. All four starters in this doubleheader went the distance, with Marcel Brede and Jon Adamec receiving the wins, and Tim Henkenjohann and Martin Amparo the losses.

Dortmund Wanderers – Solingen Alligators 5-20 (7), 1-3

The ALLIGATORS took both games on Saturday in Dortmund and widened the lead over PADERBORN to two games in the north. The UNTOUCHABLES were off this week. In the first part of the day-night doubleheader SOLINGEN took a fast 6-0 lead after two innings and even topped this start by scoring eleven runs alone in the fifth en route to an easy 20-5 victory in seven innings. The second match was much more thrilling, as Enorbel Marquez-Ramirez won the pitcher’s duel with 18 strikeouts against Matt Kemp to lead the ALLIGATORS to a 3-1 win. However the game left a bad taste in the mouth, as some “fans” of the WANDERERS nearly caused stop of play after pouring beer on the players in the SOLINGEN dugout and spit on them. DORTMUND later apologized for the bad behavior.

South

Buchbinder Legionaere Regensburg – Haar Disciples 11-1 (8), 8-0

The BUCHBINDER LEGIONAERE didn’t face many difficulties to defeat the DISCIPLES on Friday evening and Saturday afternoon, preserving their perfect record in the 2009 season. In the night game they took a fast 2-0 lead in the first, but needed to wait until the final three frames to blow the score wide open. Ludwig Glaser went three-for-four with three RBI. Philipp Howard scored twice and drove in two. Three more players crossed the plate two times. One day later REGENSBURG’s Eddie Aucoin struck out nine in six scoreless two-hit innings to pick up his fifth win of the season. Klaus Hopfensperger went two-for-four with a double, two runs scored and two RBI.

Mainz Athletics – Mannheim Tornados 2-8, 5-11

The TORNADOS used two early offensive outbursts to sweep their twin bill in MAINZ. They still trail REGENSBURG and HEIDENHEIM by six, respective three games, but extended the gap towards fourth place to three games. In game one Sascha Lutz opened the scoring for MANNHEIM with a leadoff homerun and led his team to a fast 7-0 start after four innings on their way to an 8-2 win. Chris Falls had three hits and scored twice. TORNADOS’ Rene Franke struck out eight going the distance. Mike Larson had four hits, including three doubles for the ATHLETICS. The second match also started with a rally by MANNHEIM, highlighted through a three-run homerun by Jens Heymer (4-6, 3 RBI). The A’s cut the deficit to 5-6 thanks to a three-run shot by Larson. But the TORNADOS added a bunch of insurance runs later on, including a two-run homer by Marvin Appiah to secure the 11-5 win.

Heidenheim Heidekoepfe – Gauting Indians 14-5, 9-2

HEIDENHEIM solidified second place in the standings with two wins against the INDIANS. In game one Ray Stokes (4-5, 3 runs) and Ryan Lilly (3-5) each drove in three in a 14-5 slugfest. Sam Whitehead and Hagen Raetz scored thrice. In the second match Dusty Bergman allowed three hits in six scoreless innings, while striking out five to lead the HEIDEKOEPFE to a 9-2 win. The outcome was decided in the third, when the home team plated seven runs against losing pitcher Chris Clem. Robert Gruber and Whitehead combined to drive in four.
