Canarias becomes unbeaten Spanish Juvenile Champion

Posted on May 9, 2009 by philipp

Press Release Canary Baseball Federation

Canarias juvenile team took the series with five straight wins

A very coherent canary selection was able to defeat the other five communities that attended the Spanish Juvenile Championship that took place in La Coruña. The runner up was Madrid with Cataluña in third place and Navarra, Andalusia and the local Galicia closing the standings. The matches were not easy at all and especially Madrid and Navarra gave the Canary Islands team a hard time at the beginning of their games. But the reaction to the pressure by the champion team was always positive and they were able to make the important outs and score the runs that were necessary for victory. Nestor Perez Jr. and Govani Binetti took turns to manage the team and Francisco Gonzalez worked as the third base coach for the whole meeting. Most of the credit for the good performance should go Nestor Perez Sr. who had trained the team for almost two years and it was the young players’ first competition after the three sabbatical years since the last participation that had brought the title in 2005.

Luis Guillermo Hernandez took both the batting and the pitching champions honours for the Canary Island team and was the undisputed overall MVP. The team’s captain, Giovanni Binetti, became the pitcher with the most strikeouts of the tournament. All the players have had their part in the victory and a great number of them can remain in the category for another year, some even for two more.
