Cardinals sweep Barracudas to move to 3-0 on the season
The Cards welcomed the ‘Cudas to the Allmend Sunday, and sent them home unhappy. Chris Beyeler tossed 8 innings of 5-hit baseball for the win. It was Chris’ second win in two starts this season. Beyeler struck out eight Barracudas in eight innings of work. Along the way he allowed only three runs, one of those being earned. Nderim Coma started on the hill for the Barracudas, and wasn’t nearly as affective as the Cards starter. Coma‘s defense didn’t help him, but he also gave up seven hits in 4 innings of work. When he left the game, his team was behind 6-2. Frank Berchtold relieved Coma, and had his own troubles with control problems. He would allow four hits, and eight runs. In five innings Berchtold walked eight and hit two, which was the cause of most of his problems. The Cards would eventually win the game by a score of 14-4. Offensively the Cardinals were led by Tobias Imboden; 3-4, 2 triples, 3 runs scored. John Baum; 3-3, reached base all 5 plate appearances.
Game 2 started scoreless for the first two innings, John Baum for the Cards, and Benni Montag for the ‘Cudas, keeping their opponent of the board. The Cardinals would be the first to bust loose in the third inning, three doubles in the inning from Miseal Guerrero, Samuel Paulino, and Johnny Perigos doing the damage. The Cards would end up tacking on one run in each of the next two innings, pushing their lead to 5-0 in the fifth inning. John Baum continued to cruise, running into very little trouble, allowing only two hits, and one unearned run in a complete game victory. Baum struck out nine along the way, in helping his team achieve a 5-1 victory. The two wins push the Cards ’09 record to 3-0. They resume play next week at home, Sunday 26th of April against the Sissach Frogs. Thanks for coming out to opening weekend and celebrating two good wins with us. Flyers beat Frogs in two close games 6-4, 5-3
The Therwil Flyers made the short drive to Sissach to take on the Frogs. Sam Faeder made a strong debut for his new team delivering two homeruns, one in each game. Stefan Koller went the distance for Therwil, striking out twelve in the complete game win. Daniel Traina started on the hill for the Frogs, working 7 1/3 strong innings. Traina was relieved by Christian Klarer in the 8th, who surrendered one insurance run. The Flyers would outhit their opponent 11-8, three of those hits coming off the bat of Nelson Vilomar.
Game 2 had the young Flyer pitcher Adi Kauffman starting on the mound for the visitors. Adi would dominate the first three innings until a sore arm would force his departure. The Flyers countered with Klarer, the closer of game one. Klarer would not be as fortunate as Kauffman, allowing four runs to score in the first four innings. After Kauffman left the game, Hide Oshima, another under-19 pitcher, took over on the bump. Hide would shut down the Frogs for two innings before giving up three runs, one in the sixth, and two in seventh. The Flyers turned to Lukas Croton to put out the fire. The young hurler would do just that, leaving the tying run at second base as the visitors completed the sweep. Offensively Chris Blackbee joined Sam Faeder by hitting his first long ball of the year.
Indians rebound after tough opening day loss, sweep upstart Rainbows 8-7, 6-2
Nicolas Jaquemet took the hill hoping to get the Indians first win of the season. Roger Salvodelli countered for the Rainbows, and couldn’t hold on to an early 3-0 lead. DeFrites would take Salvodelli deep to center in the third inning to even the score at 3-3. The Rainbows once again would take a three-run lead in the 5th inning. But the Indians responded as Matthew White crossed the plate to move the score to 4-6 at the end of five innings. In the 7th, DeFrites and Casimiro both doubled, contributing to the Indians first lead of the game. In the ninth, Jaquemet wouldn’t allow the Rainbows a chance to score, ending the game at a score of 8-7.
Game 2 saw Matthew White on the mound facing Matthew Crouse of the Rainbows. White allowed only two hits while striking out six in a seven inning complete game win. The Indians took early command of the game, plating five runs in the first inning. The Rainbows would counter with two runs of their own, but that would be all their scoring for the game. The wins put the Indians record at 2-1.
Challenger begin season in style, sweep Eagles 11-1, 9-2
The Challengers opened their season with two wins against the Reussbuehl Eagles on Saturday. Thomas Landis and newly-acquired Tom Huston sparked the offense in Game 1 with two homers, while Thomas Burger pitched five shutout innings for the 11-1 win. Player-coach James Sanders picked up the win in the second contest as the Challengers remained on top with a 9-2 victory.
