The HORNETS and TORNADOS settled for a split in the first doubleheader of the new Baseball-Bundesliga season. In game one Dominik Hoepfner (3-4, 2 runs) scored the decisive run in the seventh inning on a groundout by Chris Falls to lead MANNHEIM to a 3-2 win. Falls finished with three RBI. Mike Otto (MAT), back in the first division after one year below, allowed just two hits, two runs (1 ER) and three walks in five innings. He struck out five. Rene Franke (W 1-0) picked up the win, conceding just one hit and three bb in four innings of relief. Ales Keprta (L 0-1) gave up six hits, three runs (1 ER) and two walks in seven innings.
In the second match, SAARLOUIS scored five runs in the first four innings en route to a 5-3 win. The winning runs four and five passed the plate on a groundball of the bat from Alexander Bach, which got by third baseman Jens Heymer. The TORNADOS tried to rally later on, but only were able to cut the deficit to two runs. Kenny Camp (SLS) started for the HORNETS but lasted only two innings, as a tight muscle force head coach Leo Vivona to replace him by Patrick Carlson (W 1-0), who picked up the win with eight K’s in seven innings of solid relief. On the other side, Clary Carlsen (L 0-1) made his debut and the former Philadelphia Phillies farmhand took the loss after surrendering five hits, five runs (3 ER) and a walk in five innings.

Last year’s south champion HEIDEKOEPFE won both games of a doubleheader against the DISCIPLES. Scheduled as a road game, the matchup actually was played in Heidenheim, as the ballpark in Eglfing wasn’t ready yet for the new season. In the opener HEIDENHEIM scored twice in three of the first four innings en route to an 11-5 victory. Simon Guehring hit a homerun and drove in three. Ryan Lilly had three hits. But the most damage was made by the bottom of the order. Hagen Raetz scored three times, while Marcel Hering went three-for-three with two runs scored and three RBI. Michael Stephan had three hits for HAAR, but also committed three of the five errors, playing first base. Markus Winkler (W 1-0) allowed six hits, three runs and three walks in six innings. Ted Gieschen (L 0-1) gave up ten hits, seven runs and four bb in 5 2/3 innings.
In the second game a bad hop at short in the fifth led to three runs for the HEIDEKOEPFE instead of a potential double play on their way to a 6-3 win. Ryan Lilly homered, scored twice and drove in two. Robert Gruber also got two RBI. Ray Stokes reached base four times after two singles and two walks. The speedster scored two runs and stole four bases. Ty Eriksen crossed the plate twice for the DISCIPLES. Dusty Bergman (W 1-0) gave up just one hit, one run and three walks in five innings. Gregor Klinc (L 0-1) went the distance, allowing eleven hits, six runs and three bb.
