After the first two days in Nettuno, Italy were hindered by rain, the third, packed with five games, started with a 8-5 victory by the TENERIFE MARLINS over the BUCHBINDER LEGIONAERE. The Spanish champion had the better start and always had an answer, when their German pendant threatened to come back.
Carlos Macias had homered, scored twice and drove in two to lead the TENERIFE offense. Richard Montiel (3-5) and Nestor Perez had two RBI each. Jose Lopez scored twice too. Ludwig Glaser, last year playing for the Los Angeles Angels affiliate in the Arizona League, led REGENSBURG going three-for-four with a homerun, a walk and two RBI. Shortstop Matt Vance scored three times.
Martin Almstetter (L 0-1) and Ivan Granados (W 1-0), both experienced national team hurlers for their respective countries, weren’t as sharp as usual. Almstetter took the loss, allowing ten hits, eight runs (7 ER) and four walks in 6 1/3 innings. It was already his second appearance in the tournament, after a relief outing on Tuesday. Jonathan Eisenhuth replaced him in the seventh to close it out without further harm.
Granados went eight-plus innings, inducing seven hits, five runs (3 ER) and six bb, while striking out three. It was not his finest hour, but good enough to pick up the win. Audie Nunez struck out the side in the ninth around two hits and a walk.
Both teams will play again later today. PUERTO CRUZ faces DANESI NETTUNO at 15:00 CET in Nettuno. The LEGIONAERE travel to Anzio for their matchup against the GREYS, which is scheduled to start at 16:00 CET. Both matches are make-up dates for rain-outs from Wednesday.
