eurocup09_matinoOn Wednesday the European Cup in Matino, Italy finally began, as the field now is playable. T&A SAN MARINO defeated DRACI BRNO in the opener by a score of 6-1. The Italian Baseball League champion scored two runs each in the fourth, fifth and seventh frame to decide the outcome.

The unchallenged Czech champion DRACI had the better start into the match putting a run on the board in the third, when Radim Chroust scored on a RBI fielder’s choice by Tomas Polansky. But it was not enough. SAN MARINO took the lead on the two-run homerun by Massimiliano Di Biase in the bottom of the fourth. One frame later Seth La Fera and Martin Vasquez drove in two more with a single and a sac fly. They sealed the win with a two-run double by Vasquez in the seventh.

Starting pitcher Horacio Estrada (W 1-0) allowed five hits, a run and two walks in five innings, striking out seven. Relievers Luis Ramirez and Mike Crudale shut the door afterwards, combining to induce just one walk in the rest of the game, striking out nine. Martin Schneider (L 0-1) took the loss, being charged with five hits, four runs (3 ER) and three base on balls in four-plus innings.
