Euro 2007: Preview Day 5

Posted on September 11, 2007 by MrBB

Today’s action at the European Baseball Championships features the following matchups:

Netherlands (3-0) vs Germany (3-0)

Too bad Germany struggled to get past Croatia on Monday or maybe this game would have been interesting. But the Germans psyche took a big hit and the Dutch are pitching and hitting like big brothers thus far. The Dutch did make three errors in one game so there is hope for the opposition. Maybe?

Italy (2-1) vs Spain (2-1)

Italy seems to be back on track thanks to a superb outing from Giovanni CARRARA. Spain also got an All-Star performance from Yoel HENANDEZ to beat Russia but offensively the host team is struggling. A big-time matchup that might fizzle with a big, big Italian win.

France (3-0) vs Great Britain (2-1)

All eyes from Pool B will be on this game as France’s vaunted pitching staff meets a Great Britain offense that features three of the tourney’s top hitters. A win by France will put added pressure on Spain to beat Italy. A win by Great Britain would result in a three-way tie for the top spot.

Czech (2-1) vs Sweden (1-2)

The Czech Republic beat Austria ace pitcher Walter Strasser but were actually outhit 7 to 6 by the Austrians. Sweden collected eight hits off a strong Dutch pitching staff and should be confident heading into this game. This is a very, very big game for both teams.

Austria (0-3) vs Croatia (0-3)

The good thing is that one of these teams will have a win under their belt on Wednesday morning. Two evenly matched teams but Austria has more offensive firepower than Croatia. Still – with “fresh” pitching arms getting scarce for most teams – this game might turn into a scoringfest.

Ukraine (0-3) vs Russia (0-3)

Another interesting matchup of regional foes with bragging rights up for grabs. Both teams have decent pitching but neither team has done much offensively. This should be the game where the best hitters from each team have a chance to showcase their skills.
