The newly promoted team in the Division de Honor HALCONES DE VIGO got off to a perfect start against the ASTROS, last year’s ninth-place finisher. In the 5-2 win in game one, VIGO decided the outcome through two two-run innings, the fifth and the eighth. Marco Marquez and Alejandro Carrillo each drove in two runs. Adrian Porres had three hits and a RBI for Valencia. Ronny Malave (W 1-0) dominated with eight strikeouts in eight innings, allowing two runs (1 ER) on eight hits and two base on balls. Franklin Tavarez closed it out with a scoreless ninth, despite putting three men on via walks. Elvis Polanco (L 0-1) gave up six hits, three runs and a walk in six innings.

The second match on the opening day in Spain was much more one-sided. HALCONES scored in four of the first five frames, highlighted by a seven-run fifth. Marco Marques went three-for-five with a grand slam, two runs scored and six RBI. Carlos Millan (2-4, 3 runs, 2 RBI) and Michell San Gil (3-5, 2 RBI) also homered. VIGO had 16 hits in the game, eight went for extra bases. Juan Jose Lopez (W 1-0) induced four hits, a run and four bb in five innings, earning the easy win. Jorge Gomez (L 0-1) gave up four runs on eight hits in just 2 1/3 innings, taking the loss.

Beisbol Navarra – CB Sant Boi 0-13 (7), 1-10

CB SANT BOI celebrated a lopsided 13-0 shutout in their season opener in Amaya, playing against NAVARRA. Oscar Alvarez (W 1-0) debuted in the Division de Honor with seven brilliant innings of one-hit, one-walk ball, striking out nine. Jose Cruz was three-for-three at the plate with four RBI. Rafael Rivas had four hits in five at bats, scoring three times. Marc Carrillo doubled twice, scored three times and drove in two. Juan Jose Lopez (L 0-1) couldn’t follow up his impressive performance in the second half of last year’s season. He was hit hard, giving up nine runs on ten hits and two bb in 4 2/3 innings.

NAVARRA denied another shutout bid, when Sergio Diaz scored on a double play groundball in the ninth. However SANT BOI still was able to score in double digits and prevailed 10-1. Eight different players of the Catalonian team had RBIs. Milko Jaramillo and Jose Cruz each scored twice. Cruz (W 1-0) even topped Alvarez’ outing  from game one, going six innings, allowing no hits, no run and only one walk, while striking out three. On the opposing side, Juan Miguel Marte (L 0-1) gave up seven hits, five runs (3 ER) and two bb in five innings.

The runner up in last year’s championship, the FC BARCELONA needed a RBI single by Felix Isasi in the tenth to beat VILADECANS 2-1 in walk-off style. Emmanuel Febles, who had reached on a walk and advanced to third on a botched pickoff try, scored the decisive run. CB had tied the contest in the eighth through Oscar Angulo’s RBI groundout. BARCELONA led since a RBI single by Jehan Machado in the opening frame. Homer Baez (W 1-0) threw 133 pitches in a ten-inning complete game. He gave up five hits, one run and four bb, while striking out ten. Delio Martinez started for VILADECANS and allowed four hits, one run and five walks in nine innings. Pol Llopis (L 0-1) was responsible for the loss.

The second match between these two teams hadn’t such a thrilling ending, but also wasn’t as lopsided as the final score might indicate. VILADECANS took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a RBI single down the left field line by Miguel Catalan. BARCELONA tied it on a sac fly by Jorge Miqueleiz in the fourth, before deciding the outcome through two five-run rallies in the fifth and seventh periods. Newcomer Jason Friedman, who started at first in game two, debuted successfully in Spain, going three-for-five with a double and four RBI. Emmanuel Febles, Jehan Machado and Miqueleiz each scored twice. Pedro Belmonte (W 1-0) picked up the win in his first start for BARCA. He gave up three hits, an unearned run and a walk in seven innings. Joshua Castro (L 0-1) allowed five hits, six runs (4 ER) and four bb in 4 2/3 innings.

Tenerife Marlins – San Inazio Bilbao 17-2 (5), 10-0 (8)

The MARLINS crushed BILBAO in game one of the new season. They used 21 hits to score 17 runs in just five innings, highlighted by a eight-run fifth. The number one and two in the batting order Juan Carlos Macias and Daniel Sanchez, went a combined eight-for-ten with five runs scored and four RBI. Daniel Martinez hit a homerun and drove in four. Eight players scored at least twice. Fidel Mane hit a solo homerun for SAN INAZIO, but also gave up eleven runs (10 ER) on twelve hits in 1 1/3 innings of relief. Leslie Nacar (W 1-0) picked up the win. He induced one hit, two runs (1 ER) and a walk in five innings. Willy Javier Guedez (L 0-1) allowed nine hits, six runs (3 ER) and three bb for the loss.

The second game of the twin bill wasn’t much different. The MARLINS offense nearly scored at will and the pitching completely silenced the opposing batters. Daniel Martinez tripled, doubled and drove in two. Daniel Sanchez reached home three times. Richard Montiel drove in three. Ivan Granados (W 1-0) struck out seven in seven three-hit innings, walking one. Audie Nunez closed it out with two K’s in the eighth. Pedro Mendez (L 0-1) gave up six hits, six runs (5 ER) and three bb in three innings.

El Llano – CD Pamplona 7-0, 7-0

EL LLANO shut out PAMPLONA twice on the opening weekend in Spain. In game one, they scored four runs in the third, highlighted by a bases clearing double from Emilio Perez, en route to a 7-0 win. Javier Peyrote scored three runs. Roberto Noriega had two hits and two RBIs in the contest. Juan De Leon (W 1-0) allowed only four hits and a walk in seven innings for the first win of the year. Alexis Fumero (L 0-1) struck out eight in 6 1/3 innings, but also gave up four hits, five runs (4 ER) and three bb.

The home team in Gijon repeated the 7-0 victory in game two. Ruben Fente (W 1-0) struck out nine in eight innings, allowing just two hits and two walks. Gabriel Sanso led off with three runs. Marco’s Trillo went three-for-four with three RBI. Emilio Perez had two RBI. Eneko Del Burgo (0-1) gave up seven hits, four runs (2 ER) and two bb in 4 2/3 innings for the loss. Shortstop Chris Iverson debuted for PAMPLONA this weekend, but went hitless in eight at bats.
