Baseball at Universiade 2017: Czech Republic loses to USA / France beats Russia

Posted on August 25, 2017 by philipp

The baseball tournament at the 2017 Universiade in Taipei City continued on Friday with the games of the Super Round Robin and the Consolation Round. The Czech Republic, which qualified as group winner for the next phase, lost 0-8 against the United States. Six runs in the first put them in a big hole from the get go. It was not only a shutout, but also a no-hitter, as Cole McDonald issued just three walks, while striking out seven. Tomas Duffek got charged with the loss.

Meanwhile France and Russia squared off in an all-European consolation round game. France prevailed 11-7 in the end. Russia had the better start and took a 4-1 lead after three frames. But seven runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth put France into control to secure the win. Norbert Jongerius went 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBI. Lucas Serafin pitched seven innings for the win. Viacheslav Shmelev took the loss. Nikita Monakhov had four hits for Russia.

In the other games in Taipei Japan downed Korea 2-1. Chinese Taipei crushed Mexico 11-1. On Saturday the Czech Republic and Japan will face each other. France takes on Mexico. Russia plays against Chinese Taipei.
