Team USA has reached the second phase of the 2017 World Baseball Classic after defeating Canada 8-0 on Sunday evening at Marlins Park in Miami, Florida. Seven runs in the first two frames decided the outcome quickly. With the win, the United States improved to 2-1, while Canada dropped to 0-3.

Tyler Duffy and four relievers kept the Maple Leafs to four hits and a walk in nine scoreless innings to lay the groundwork for the win. Former Major Leaguer Ryan Dempster issued two hits, three runs and three walks, while only picking up two outs in the first, getting removed from the game in a hurry.

Eric Hosmer with a two-run double in the first, Nolan Arendano with a three-run home run in the second and Buster Posey with a solo home run in the seventh had the big hits in the game. Posey finished with three RBI. Christian Yelich scored twice.
