Fiorini Forli wins European Softball Cup in Haarlem

Italian softball power Fiorini Forli captured the 2007 European Cup Women’s “A” Softball Championship with a 5-2 win over league rival Mosca Macerata. The tournament was held from August 20-25 in the Dutch city of Haarlem.

Top teams competing in the tourney included the Haarlem Sparks (Netherlands), Mannheim Tornados (Germany), Viladecans (Spain), Dornbirn Sharxx (Austria), Brasschaat (Belgium), Cavigal Nice (France), Carrousel Bosco Sport (Russia), and SK Joudrs (Czech Republic).

The two-time defending Italian champions Fiorini Forli finished the tournament 7-2 with victories over the Mannheim Tornados (2-0), Carrousel Bosco Sport (3-2), Viladecans (9-1), SK Joudrs (7-0 and 5-0), and Haarlem (1-0).

Mosca Macerata – who defeated the Haarlem Sparks in last year’s championship game – claimed the silver medal with wins against SK Joudrs (8-0), Brasschaat (13-0), Dornbirn (5-1), Cavigal (6-0), Fiorini (4-0), Carrousel (7-0), and Haarlem (6-3 and 8-1).

The Sparks (6-2) settled for the bronze medal and won their first six games before dropping a pair of contests to Mosca Macerata. SK Joudrs (4th place), Carrousel Bosco Sport (5th place), Brasschaat Braves (6th place), Dornbirn Sharxx (7th place), Mannheim Tornados (8th place), Viladecans (9th place), and Cavigal Nice (10th place) round out the final standings.
