Germany wins German Baseball Open

Posted on September 2, 2007July 7, 2008 by MrBB

The German National Team has won the German Baseball Open in Regensburg. The team beat the British National Team 14-9 in Sunday’s Tournament final. Germany recorded 15 hits and jumped ahead early in the game with 9-2 after four innings. The British team had trouble finding the right pitchers to stop the German offense having used their best hurlers (Essery, Rennery) in the Semifinals. But also the German Pitching staff showed some problems. Tim HENKENJOHANN (fomer Minnesota Twins A) left the mound in the 3rd Inning and was reliefed by Martin ALMSTETTER and Rodney GESSMANN who also had trouble with the British Lineup. With the score 11-9 in the 8th Inning Manager Greg FRADY brought in Andre HUGHES and Eugen HEILMANN for one inning each to close the game down. German OF/C Simon GÜHRING was named MVP of the Tournament and had 4 hits, 3 R, 7 RBI including a Grand Slam HR.

The Baseball squad of Great Britain was a little surprise to reach the final. With a record of 0-3 in the tournament they had beaten Whitewater University 6-4 in the semifinals and kicked out the team that had been dominating the Baseball Open up to then. The British team showed that they have good pitching for games that need to be won. Germany reached the final by beating Paderborn 2-0 in a Pitching duel between Eddie AUCOIN of Paderborn and Enorbel MARQUEZ RAMIREZ. RAMIREZ proofed his quality yet another time and is likely to be Germany’s No 1 Starter for Barcelona.
