Venados de Mazatlan from Mexico has won the 2016 Caribbean Series on Sunday in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. It’s the third title for a Mexican team in the past four years. Mazatlan defeated the Tigres de Aragua 5-4 in the final. Jorge Vasquez hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth to decide the outcome. He had been playing for Aragua in the Venezuelan Winter League during the regular season. Mazatlan finished the tournament in Santo Domingo with a perfect 6-0 record.
Cangrejeros de Santurce from Puerto Rico finished in third place ahead of Ciego de Avila from Cuba and the hosting Leones del Escogido. Next year the Caribbean Series will be played in Culiacan. Cuba would like to host the Caribbean Series in 2018. Panama is interested in joining as soon as 2017. Former Major Leaguer Freddy Garcia, who played for Venezuela in the Premier12 last November, ended his career by starting the final for Aragua on Sunday.
Italy’s Alex Liddi was a member of Venados during the Caribbean Series and won the title. He was 4-for-17 with a triple and a double in four games during last week’s action in Santo Domingo.
