Melissa Mayeux makes History: First Female Player registered on MLB’s International Signing List

Mayeux

16-year-old French baseball and softball player Melissa Mayeux made history, as she became the first known female baseball player to be registered for the international signing period of Major League Baseball. This means that she is eligible to be signed by any MLB club starting on July 2.

Mayeux’s addition to MLB’s international registration list created quite some buzz on Monday afternoon and evening. Major League Baseball ran a feature story on MLB.com, followed up by ESPN and even CNN among other major outlets.

Simply being on the list is history even though it doesn’t automatically means Mayeux will get signed. Nonetheless she is going to create more headlines during the summer. She is currently on the roster of the French National Team for the U18 Baseball European Championship in Ostrava, Czech Republic, is then expected to suit up for France in the Women’s Softball European Championship in Rosmalen, Netherlands and afterwards will be one of about the 50 most talented European players between 15 and 19 years old at the MLB European Elite Camp in Hoofddorp, Netherlands.
