Horrible Tragedy in Sant Boi

Posted on January 24, 2009January 25, 2009 by philipp

Heavy winds caused a horrible accident on Saturday in Catalonia, Spain. A sports hall in Sant Boi, where the youth teams of CB Sant Boi practice every Saturday, collapsed and buried at least 20 people. Four children between ages nine and twelve are dead, 16 suffered injuries and had to be rushed into hospitals. One child is still in critical condition.

Usually up to 60 people train at the facility Saturdays, but due to the bad weather many chose to stay home. The gym was 25 years old and was considered in good shape. Only work on wiring was needed in recent years. The Spanish Baseball and Softball Federation canceled all planned activities this weekend out of respect for the victims.

Our sincere condolences go out to the families and the Baseball club in Sant Boi.

IBAF Statement from Dr. Harvey Schiller following the tragedy on Saturday in Sant Boi:

“On behalf of the entire global baseball family, we want to express our deep sympathy to the families and friends of these young men who fell victim to this terrible tragedy.  We offer our support from this day forward in memory of these young athletes.”
