Dutch RHP Lars Huijer traded to Chicago Cubs

Posted on January 15, 2015 by philipp

21-year-old Dutch right-hander Lars Huijer has a new home. On Wednesday he got traded by his Seattle Mariners to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for left-handed pitcher Mike Kickham. Kickham was designated for assignment when the Cubs signed outfielder Chris Denorfia.

Huijer moved up to Single-A and High-A in the 2014 season. In 28 games (24 starts) between the two levels he went 6-9 with an ERA of 5.08. He struck out 76 and walked 61 in 124 innings. Compared to previous season he heavily increased his workload, while losing some control and being more prone to giving up home runs.

The Mariners signed him in 2011, when Huijer also made his debut in minor league baseball. He is from Haarlem, Netherlands. His brother Swen Huijer spent four seasons in the Boston Red Sox organization.
