The Netherlands won’t make the second round at the I 21U Baseball World Cup in Taichung. On Monday afternoon they lost their third consecutive game in the tournament. Nicaragua prevailed 6-4. The Dutch team had a 4-0 lead after five innings, but a five-run sixth turned the game around for the undefeated Nicaragua. Kirvin Moesquit continued his strong play with two runs. Deyvin Averruz picked up the win in relief, Reginald Bomberg took the loss.
Korea rebounded from their loss to Chinese Taipei on Sunday with a 10-0 shutout against Mexico on Monday. A five-run seventh inning ended the game early due to ten-run rule. Yundong Kim struck out seven in 6 2/3 scoreless innings. Ivan Rivera got charged with the loss. Eight different players scored for Korea.
In the third afternoon matchup on Monday the Czech Republic entered the win column by edging out Italy 3-1. Marek Cervenka (1-1) struck out 11 in a complete game effort. He allowed just two hits, a run and three walks. The lone true blemish on his clean slate was only a solo home run by Mattia Mercuri in the top of the eighth. The long ball also broke his no-hit bid. Richard Sazavsky went deep for the Czech Republic. Filippo Crepaldi took the loss. Italy dropped to 2-2 in the tournament, the Czech improved to 1-3.
In the evening Chinese Taipei shut out New Zealand 7-0. Three runs in the first decided things quickly. A costly error at short set up the first rally. Tai Chun Yang and Chieh Hsien Chen had two-run hits. Jhih Long Yang struck out nine in seven scoreless four-hit innings. Blair Johnstone took the loss.
Australia got back to .500 in the tournament with a 14-1 victory over Venezuela (0-3). Four runs in the fifth and six in the sixth turned the game into a blowout. Aaron Thompson kept the South Americans to three hits and a run in six innings, striking out seven. Robbie Perkins and Adam Silva combined for seven runs and four RBI. Silva tripled twice. Francisco Chaparro got charged with the loss.
