European Championship Juveniles U12: Day 2, July 9, 2014

Posted on July 10, 2014 by philipp

Day two of the European Championship Juveniles U12 in Ljubljana, Slovenia saw three close games. The first round ends on Thursday with the semi-finals and classification games starting on Friday.

Lithuania rebounded from a tough loss to Belarus with a 9-8 win over France to open the second day of the competition. A sac fly by Andrius Jonaitis in the bottom of the seventh inning made the difference. Vytas Valincius had a home run, two runs scored and three RBI for Lithuania. He also struck out 12 in four innings of no-hit relief to pick up the win.

Belarus once again found a way to win a slugfest. They edged out Austria 25-19 to improve to 2-0 in the tournament. After scoring 16 runs in the first three frames, Belarus needed a nine-run seventh to secure the win. Kiryl Lapchanka and Andrei Fedaruk scored four runs apiece. Tobias Werner had four runs and four RBI for Austria.

In the evening match Russia entered the tournament with a 7-6 victory over Slovenia. They took a quick 7-1 lead before Slovenia made things interesting with a five-run sixth. But closer Pavel Demidov struck out three in the last 1 1/3 frames to end the contest in style. Carlos Tovar hit a three-run home run for the host.
