The Italian Softball League officially opened the 2013 season on Easter weekend, however only one doubleheader was played due to bad weather. It finally really got underway last Saturday. It is a new format with two pools and 11 teams in the ISL, including one in the Italian capital Rome with Urbe Roma.
The biggest surprise during the first two weeks of competition was probably the 2-1 eight-inning win of the Bluegirls Bologna over Polisportiva Caserta, just hours after losing 0-12 in four innings. Pitchers Johana Gomez and Alice Ronchetti were locked into a pitcher’s duel, exchanging zeroes through the first seven frames. In the eighth with the tiebreaker rules in effect, Bologna countered Anna Mancini’s run for Caserta in the top half with a RBI single for the tie by Marta Pianella in the bottom half. Pianella eventually scored the winning run, when Caserta’s catcher threw the ball away on a sac bunt.
