Marlins win Spanish Junior Championship

Four matches – four knockout wins

The Tenerife Marlins hurlers kept the opposing batters to a total of only six runs in the four games they played in the competition and Remedios and Rijkhof even managed a combined no hitter in the semi-final against Arga from Pamplona. Starting pitchers Cristian Remedios, Deion Galvan and the pitcher of the final game Toni Romero never got into trouble and the manager Nestor Perez gave the relievers Diego Piva, Miguel Pulido and Ruben Rijkhof an opportunity to get into the game only for tactical reasons.

Meanwhile the offensive lineup responded in every batting spot and the first batter Deion Galvan scored in each first inning to give his club a lead it would never loose.  Luis Alfonso Hernandez usually helped him advance extra bases and Lesther Galvan, Wesley Werner and Alejandro Carrillo took care of getting the RBIs they were supposed to. Jose Melendez added some more power and Giannini Binetti and Jose Manuel Rodriguez also could have been in any of the previous batting spots.

The team showed discipline and defensive skills, making only three errors throughout the tournament.

Recaps

Good start for Marlins – Marlins-Irabia 32–3
With 15 runs scored in the first inning the Marlins showed they were well prepared for the tournament. Cristian Remedios went three innings giving up only one run and the closer Diego Piva allowed two runs in two innings to seal the important first victory.

Offensively the whole lineup had its part contributing to the unusually high score and batted a total of 21 hits.

Marlins with 13 hits – Marlins-FC Barcelona 13–2
Deion Galvan pitched five scoreless innings allowing only three hits in another game ended by mercy rule after seven innings. FC Barcelona’s pitching was not at all helped with the six errors committed by their defense and early in the game Marlins had a considerable advantage.

Marlins pitchers combine for a no-hitter – Marlins-Arga 15–0
Cristian Remedios and Ruben Rijkhof allowed no hits and no runs in the semi-final game against Arga combining nine strikeouts in five innings. Only two bases on balls and one defensive error permitted Arga to have base runners in the game.

Argas’ starting pitcher had to be replaced in the first inning and Marlins offense once more produced multiple runs. Wesley Werner led the charge with two hits in two at bats including a double, three runs scored and three RBI.

Complete game for Toni Romero – Marlins-Hercules14–1
As part of the Marlins Senior Spanish Champion roster leftie Toni Romero was the pitcher for the final game in the plans of manager Nestor Perez, and he was surely up to the task as he pitched the complete seven innings of the game.

Canarias can celebrate another championship thanks to baseball after Marlins Senior earlier this season won the Division de Honor for a fourth consecutive time.

Teamwork the key to success

Marlins won the championship and team starting catcher Alejandro Carrillo not only threw out two and kept the opposition without stealing a single base, he also took the batting title with  six hits in nine at bats and a .667 average in the first round. But the secret behind the great performance was the team spirit and total concentration on the task by all the players, coaches and collaborators. Nestor Perez Sr. and Jr. invested many hours honing the player’s skills, promoting teamwork and the mental game with the help of coaches Tito Arratia and Giovani Binetti, and Luis Dominguez, the clubs president, helped organizing the tour.
