Final Spots in World Cup on the line at Copa America

Five spots at the 2009 Baseball World Cup in Europe are still open for five teams from Central and South America. Currently the Copa America de Beisbol with ten countries in Venezuela is underway and concluded the first round this week. Today the final round with the eight best teams begins and last till Sunday, October 5th. The best squads so far are coming from Puerto Rico (4-0), which are the only undefeated team, Nicaragua, Netherlands Antilles and Mexico (all 3-1). Colombia and Guatemala each went 0-4 and were eliminated.

Standings after Round 1:
Group A:

  1. Nicaragua 3-1
  2. Netherlands Antilles 3-1
  3. Venezuela 2-2
  4. Panama 2-2
  5. Colombia 0-4

Group B:

  1. Puerto Rico 4-0
  2. Mexico 3-1
  3. BrazilĀ  2-2
  4. Aruba 1-3
  5. Guatemala 0-4
