BOLOGNA defeated NETTUNO 6-1 in game one of the Coppa Italia finals on Friday evening. They now need one more victory on Saturday or Sunday to win the cup tournament and clinch a spot in next year’s European Cup.
UNIPOL BANCA started strong, as they took a 2-0 lead in the first after a two-run homerun by Claudio Liverziani. DANESI’s Igor Schiavetti cut the deficit in a half in the fourth with a RBI single. But FORTITUDO countered with four insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth to blow the score wide open. Diego Bonci, Juan Angrisano, Joseph Mazzuca and Manuel Gasparri picked up RBIs. Leadoff hitter Giovanni Pantaleoni scored twice after reaching four times on three hits and a walk.
Cody Cillo struck out nine in seven innings for the win. He allowed just one run on five hits. 71 of his 100 pitches were strikes. Victor Arias took the loss after giving up eight hits, six runs and two walks in 4 1/3 innings.
The best-of-three series moves to Nettuno for the remaining two games.
