USA defeats Canada in third warm up for Olympics

USA 031 000 05X  9 10 1

Nate Schierholtz (grand slam), Terry Tiffee, Matt LaPorta and Mike Hessman homered, as Team USA crushed Canada 9-1 on Sunday to take a 2-1 lead in the four-game exhibition series on North Carolina to finish preparations for the Olympic Games in Beijing in two weeks.

Despite the offensive outburst, the story of the match was starter Brandon Knight. A week after his major league debut for the New York Mets against the St. Louis Cardinals he dominated the maple leafs with ten strikeouts in five scoreless innings. At one point he punched out six batters in a row. He allowed just two hits and a walk in the win. He threw 74 pitches, 50 for strikes.

Chris Berg got the start for Canada and gave up four runs on five hits in six innings. Stubby Clapp scored their lone run of the day.

Both teams complete their warm up schedule this Monday at 7.05pm ET in Durham. You can watch the game live on MLB.tv at MLB.com.
