Audio Interviews with Stephen Strasburg and Jerry Meyers of Team USA

Peter Ferak, player with the Vienna Metrostars and author of the coverguy-blog, went to the World University Baseball Championship the past weekend and interviewed prospect Stephen Strasburg and pitching coach Jerry Meyers from the victorious Team USA.

Strasburg recently celebrated his 20th birthday and is currently studying at the San Diego State University in California. The right-hander made the switch from closer to starting pitcher this past season and features and impressive fastball in the high nineties. He was nominated to the collegiate roster of Team USA and led the pitching staff to an record team ERA of 0.88 and a 24-0 record on their tour this summer, including championships at the Haarlem Baseball Week in the Netherlands and the WUBC in the Czech Republic. He also is nominated, as the only college player on the roster, to compete for the United States at the upcoming Olympic Games in Beijing, China. Strasburg is likely being selected in the first round of the 2009 MLB amateur draft.

Meyers is the head coach of the Iowa State College since four years and served as the pitching coach for the USA on their impressive trip around the globe. He is 42 years old and graduated from Iowa State in 1987. He was a starting pitcher for four years for the Monarchs and began shortly after receiving a master of education in physical education in South Alabama in 1989. He mainly served as a pitching coach on several colleges before taking over head coach duties at Iowa State in 2005. He was named Collegiate Coach of the Year in 2006.
