Recaps South: Peter Wiggins shuts out Mannheim Tornados

Posted on May 31, 2011 by philipp

Southern Division:

Buchbinder Legionaere Regensburg – Haar Disciples 13-2, 5-1

The Buchbinder Legionaere defeated the Haar Disciples twice to improve their record to 12-2 for the season. In game one Mike Bolsenbroek struck out twelve in seven innings to lead Regensburg to a 13-2 win. He allowed just two runs on five hits. Chris Zirzlmeier and Evan LeBlanc paced the offense with homeruns. Petr Cech and Ludwig Glaser picked up three hits apiece. In the second game on Saturday the Buchbinder Legionaere scored twice in the third and added three more in the sixth en route to a 5-1 win. Boris Bokaj again pitched in relief of Justin Kuehn for his fifth win of the season. Paco Garcia took the loss. Nils Hartkopf had three of the five Disciples hits.

Bad Homburg Hornets – Mannheim Tornados 11-16, 6-0

The Bad Homburg Hornets stunned the Mannheim Tornados with a split. In game one Ian O’Connor and Matt Lokken had three-run hits to lead Mannheim to a 16-11 win in a slugfest. The Tornados scored eleven runs in the last four frames to seal the win. In the second match Peter Wiggins probably had his best start of the 2011 season, allowing just five hits and a walk in nine scoreless innings to lead the Hornets to a 6-0 shutout. He struck out ten. Just two Mannheim runners reached third base. Brad Olt scored three of the six Bad Homburg runs.

Mainz Athletics – Heidenheim Heidekoepfe 7-10, 3-4

The Mainz Athletics inaugurated their new ballpark with two losses against the Heidenheim Heidekoepfe, which got some payback for the two 0-1 shutouts from a few weeks ago. In the first game Heidenheim overcame two homeruns by Peter Johannessen and a six-run Mainz rally in the ninth to prevail 10-7. In the second match a problem with the new mound nearly led to the suspension of the game. The Heidekoepfe scored two runs apiece in the last two innings to erase a 0-3 deficit in a 4-3 win. Andrew Smith tied the contest in the ninth with a RBI double and scored the winning run, when the A’s couldn’t field a bunt by Michael Weigl cleanly. Johannessen had driven in two of the three runs for the home team.
