Merchtem Cats beat Gent Knights to secure First Division Spot

Posted on October 7, 2010 by philipp

The Merchtem Cats have secured their spot in the 2011 Belgian First Division after defeating the Gent Knights 2-1 in the best-of-three relegation series in the past two weeks. The Cats had to go the distance after losing game two 6-9. They had crushed the Knights 14-4 in game one and clinched their next season ticket with an 8-3 victory.

Merchtem had finished the 2010 campaign in the First Division with a 3-21 record in seventh place after the regular season. In the final round they won just two of the eight games combined against the Namur Angels and Mortsel Stars, needing to play a relegation series.

Gent had an 11-7 record in fourth place after the regular season in the 2nd Division. However during the final round they moved past the Beveren Lions and Antwerp Eagles into second place in the standings with five wins in eleven games. The Borgerhout Squirrels came in first to return to the First Division in 2011.
