20100804-BOL-PAR-SF-MATOS-Jesus-BOL-(Ferrini-FIBS)Reigning champion UGF Bologna has won game one of the Italian Baseball Series on Friday evening. Fortitudo defeated Cariparma Parma at the Nino Cavalli Stadium by a score of 2-1. Runs in the third and sixth frames got them in front. Parma only was able to avoid the shutout later on. Game two will follow on Saturday at 9pm CET.

Fortitudo got off to the better start, when Livinston Santaniello reached with a leadoff single in the third, moved to second on a groundout, stole third and scored on a flyball by Giuseppe Mazzanti. Three frames later Joe Mazzuca doubled, stole third and crossed the plate on a fielder’s choice groundball by Stefano Landuzzi to make it 2-0.

Parma tried to come back in the eighth. Juan Camilo led off with a single and scored all the way from first on a double by Bologna’s former catcher Manuel Gasparri. He was replaced by pinch runner Mattia Bianchini who got picked off second moments later. This turned out to be costly, as Riccardo Bertagnon followed with a double which could have tied the game.

Leonardo Zileri struck out to end the eighth and Cariparma went down in order in the ninth to lose 1-2. Jesus Matos (W 1-0) allowed just seven hits and a walk in 6 2/3 scoreless innings for the win. Gustavo Martinez (L 0-1) gave up four hits, two runs and two bb in also 6 2/3 innings to take the loss. Victor Moreno closed it out for the save.
