France overcame a 2-5-deficit to beat Italy 6-5 at the Under-21 European Championship in Brno on Friday, handing the runner up from 2008 its third loss in four games. The French team is now 3-1 and has good chance to reach the championship game with a victory over Russia on Saturday. Three runs in the top of the ninth completed the comeback. Two runners scored on a big error by Enrico Ciuffetelli and the third on a RBI single by Jorge Hereaud. Italy had taken the lead with a four-run sixth. Alessandro Vaglio went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs and a RBI. Filippo Bertolini (ITA) allowed seven hits, three runs (1 ER) and three bb in 6 1/3 frames. Quentin Pourcel (FRA) issued four hits, a run and five walks in 4 2/3 innings. Edison Garcia Martinez (W 1-0) received the win. Elia Pasquali (L 0-1) took the loss.

Ukraine – Slovakia 8-14

Slovakia has its first win at the Under-21 European Championship after out-slugging the Ukraine 14-8. Oliver Pentek homered and drove in three. Michal Noga scored three times and picked up four RBI. Michal Valkovic crossed the plate on four occasions. Mykhailo Nakonechnyi went 3-for-4 with a walk and four RBI for the Ukraine. Michal Esmir (W 1-0) conceded ten hits, four runs (3 ER) and three bb in six-plus innings. Kostyantyn Korolev (L 1-1), who had beaten Italy on day one, surrendered eight hits, eight runs (5 ER) and two walks in four innings.

Russia – Czech Republic 3-7

The Czech team didn’t get hurt for five errors and improved to 4-0 in the tournament with a 7-3 win over Russia, which is 2-2. Vojtech Jelinek (W 2-0) allowed just one run on three hits in seven innings to lead his team to the victory. He struck out seven. Michal Ondracek drove in three, including two in a three-run eighth to blow the score wide open. Matej Hejma went 3-for-5 with two doubles, a run and a RBI. Evgeny Vorotyntsev (L 1-1) took the loss after 5 1/3 innings, seven hits, four runs (3 ER) and four bb.
