After Tuesday’s surprise loss to the Ukraine Italy was ready to play one day later and scored five runs in the second en route to a 7-4 win over Russia. The latter tried to come back in the end, but it was too little too late. Andrea D’Amico and Stefano Giannetti combined for four RBI. Anton Evseev collected four hits for Russia. Matteo Pizziconi (ITA) got the starting nod and allowed four hits and two walks in 4 1/3 innings. Luca Lomonte (W 1-0) received the win in relief. Dmitry Semenov (L 0-1) surrendered four hits, five unearned runs and four bb in 1 2/3 frames to take the loss.

France – Ukraine 7-3

France also entered the win column at the Under-21 European Championship in Brno, Czech Republic on Tuesday. They defeated the Ukraine 7-3. Three runs in the first and four in the fourth decided the outcome early. Leadoff hitters Maxime Lefevre and Sebastien Duchossoy combined for four runs scored. Andy Paz drove in two. Roman Boyko had two RBIs for the Ukrainian team. Euri Garcia Martinez (W 1-0) conceded seven hits, three runs and three bb in six innings. Dmytro Limarenko (L 0-1) gave up seven hits, seven runs (2 ER) and two walks in three-plus frames.

After the Czech team already had scored six runs in the first six innings for a commanding 6-2 lead against Slovakia, they added six more in the seventh to decide things due to ten-run rule by a score of 12-2. Jakub Sladek (3 RBI) highlighted the big rally with a two-run homerun. Michal Ondracek and Petr Zyma combined for three hits, three runs and four RBI at the top of the batting order. Vojtech Papez (W 1-0) allowed seven hits, two runs (1 ER) and a walk in 4 2/3 innings for the win. Marek Bosansky (L 0-1) was charged with nine hits, eight runs and four bb in 6 1/3 innings.
