Cuba wins 5th World University Baseball Championship

Cuba has won the 5th World University Baseball Championship in Japan thanks to a ten-inning 4-3 win over Team USA in the finals. Alfredo Despaigne decided the outcome with a walk-off three-run homerun in the bottom of the first extra inning. It was his second homer of the game. The American college squad had scored two runs in the top of the frame. Host Japan finished third after shutting out Korea 9-0 in the bronze medal match. No European team participated in the tournament.
