IBL Semis: Bologna, San Marino prevail in Openers

The semi-final round in the Italian Baseball League started on Wednesday with two games. UGF Bologna and T&A San Marino came out winning. After three weeks of round-robin play the best two teams will reach the Italian Baseball Series, trying to win the championship in Italy.

Cariparma Parma out-hit UGF Bologna 12-3, but still lost a nail-biter 0-1 in 14 innings on Wednesday in the Italian Baseball League. Livinston Santaniello scored the lone run of the night on a throwing error by first baseman Alex Sambucci in the bottom of the 14th frame. In difference to the regular season, the IBAF Extra Inning Tiebreaker Rule wasn’t used.

Gustavo Martinez (PAR) only conceded a fourth-inning double to Jairo Ramos Gizzi and four walks in eight scoreless innings. Jesus Matos (BOL) pitched in and out of trouble, allowing nine hits in seven scoreless frames. Afterwards Marco Grifantini (PAR) and Victor Moreno (BOL) issued kept the scoreboard clean with four one-hit innings of relief. Fabio Milano (W) finally picked up the win, while Justin Cicatello (L) took the loss.

Parma had Leonardo Zileri back after an injury. Both teams will meet on Friday and Saturday in Parma. 1,100 people were in the stands in Bologna.

1,300 people saw Telemarket Rimini losing 1-4 to T&A San Marino at the Pirati Stadium in Rimini. The Titans scored two runs in the second and two in the ninth en route to the victory. Max De Biase hit a solo homerun. Tony Granato, Riccardo Suardi and Simone Albanese also picked up RBIs for San Marino in the game. Jhonny Carvajal scored the lone run for Rimini in the seventh on a wild pitch.

Henry Bonilla (W) allowed just one run on three hits in seven strong innings to pick up the win. Jose Escalona (S) closed it out with two one-hit, one-walk innings of relief. Jim Brower (L) struck out eleven in seven innings, but also was responsible for five hits, two runs and a bb to take the loss. Chris Di Roma gave up two more runs later on.
