After Tuesday 0-10 crushing against the Netherlands, Cuba suffered its second loss at the Haarlemse Honkbalweek one day later, when Japan beat the record world champion 4-2. An error by shortstop Alexander Ayala and RBI singles by Chitose Hosokawa and Koki Uchiyama led to an early 3-0 lead after two frames. Cuba cut the deficit to two runs thanks to a homerun by Danel Castro in the third. But they didn’t come back. Both teams only scored once more until the end, Japan on a fielder’s choice in the seventh and Cuba on an error in the ninth. Yudai Ohno (W) allowed seven hits, two runs (1 ER) and four bb while going the distance. Freddy Alvarez (L) issued five hits, four runs (3 ER) and two walks in 6 1/3 innings. Cuba had shut out Japan on opening day in Haarlem.
The evening game between the Netherlands and Taiwan on Wednesday in Haarlem was canceled due to a bad weather forecast. The organizers rearranged the schedule for the coming days. The match will be made up on Friday.
