Haarlemse Honkbalweek starts on Friday afternoon

Posted on July 8, 2010July 14, 2010 by philipp

On Friday afternoon the 25th edition of the International Tournament Haarlemse Honkbalweek opens with two games. Six teams are coming to the Pim Mulier Stadium in Haarlem. Host Netherlands, Cuba, Taiwan, Japan, Venezuela and the NJCAA All Stars from the USA will battle for the trophy until July 18th.

The last edition in 2008 was won by Team USA with Stephen Strasburg, Mike Minor and Mike Leake heading an impressive pitching staff, which was able to beat Cuba twice in the tournament. Cuba hasn’t won in Haarlem since 1998. The Dutch team last won in 2006.

The organizers changed the schedule for game slightly, as Venezuela’s trip from Caracas through London to Amsterdam was delayed by six hours. So the American squad will open the Haarlem Baseball Week at 2pm against Taiwan, while Japan and Venezuela now will square off at 7pm. Cuba and the Netherlands enter the tournament on Saturday.
