Henry Bonilla (W) allowed just two hits, a run and a walk in eight strong innings to lead San Marino to a 4-2 win over Rimini, taking over sole position for first place in the Italian Baseball League. The Titans took an early 1-0 lead in the opening period, when Carlos Duran drove in Tony Granato with a RBI groundout.
In the following Bonilla and Pirates’ starter Jim Brower (L) exchanged zeros until the seventh, when Jhonny Carvajal tied the game with a solo homerun. But T&A answered right away in the bottom of the same inning. Francesco Imperiali put his team up in front again with a leadoff homerun. A double by Riccardo Suardi made it 3-1.
San Marino added another insurance run in the eighth on a RBI single by Ardley Jansen. Rimini tried to come back in the ninth against closer Sergio Escalona, but only managed a run by Danny Gonzalez on a sac fly by Carvajal. Brower took the loss, allowing five hits, three runs (2 ER) and three bb in six-plus innings.
