Buchbinder Legionaere Regensburg – Heidenheim Heidekoepfe 10-3, 5-3
The Buchbinder Legionaere opened the game day on Friday evening with a 10-3 win over defending champion Heidekoepfe in front of 537 people in attendance. Cedric Bassel and Chris Howard scored in the sixth to put Regensburg ahead 4-2 before they blew things wide open with a six-run rally against their former pitcher Martin Almstetter in the eighth. Boris Bokaj (W 2-0) pitched seven strong innings, allowing just two runs on three hits, while striking out five. Markus Winkler (L 1-1) took the loss. The Legionaere out-hit Heidenheim 17-5 in the rout.
In the second game on Saturday afternoon 613 people witnessed a 5-3 win by Regensburg, which improved to 4-0 in 2010. RBI hits by Simon Guehring, Peter Dankerl and Michael Weigl put Heidenheim 3-0 in front in the opening frame. But the Buchbinder Legionaere came back. They erased a run from the deficit in the third on a RBI single by Richard Klijn and tied the game in the seventh on hits by Cedric Bassel and Christoph Zirzlmeier. In the eighth Matt Vance reached base with a single, stole second and scored the go-ahead run on a groundball by Ludwig Glaser through the legs of third baseman Hagen Raetz. Petr Cech drove in the former Minor Leaguer with a single to add an insurance run. Chris Paterson (W 2-0) got win number two of the season, while Dusty Bergman (L 1-1) suffered the first loss.
Mainz Athletics – Haar Disciples 14-3 (7), 0-5
In a duel of teams, which both had kicked off the season with two wins, Mainz had the better start winning game one by a score of 14-3. Just moments after Haar had taken a 3-0 lead, the Athletics brought 14 batters to the plate to score eight runs in the bottom of the second to decide the outcome early. Hendrik Schewe went 3-for-4 with three RBI. Four players scored twice for the A’s. Mike Larson hit a two-run homerun. Lukas Steinlein had a two-run double for the Disciples. Ted Gieschen (L 0-1) after three innings, in which he allowed eleven runs (7 ER) on eight hits and three walks. He started in place of the injured Gregor Klinc. Manuel Moeller (W 2-0) went the distance for his second win of the season.
But Disciples pitching had the upper hand in game two, when Calvin Brutus (W 2-0) shut down the A’s offense through nine innings, leading his team to a 5-0 shutout. He issued just four hits and three walks, while striking out four. He also produced a whopping 15 groundouts. Haar took the lead in the third on a RBI double by Lukas Steinlein. David Selsemeyer scored the second run one frame later, before three runs in the ninth, two on a homerun by Zach Kim, secured the win. Soh Terada (L 1-1) took the loss after six innings of work.
Saarlouis Hornets – Neuenburg Atomics 1-4, 8-3
The Atomics traveled to Saarlouis in week two and drove home with a split. Janos Daroczi (W 1-0) got the start and helped Neuenburg to a 4-1 win in game one with nine strong innings. After Eddie Martinez scored the first run for the Hornets in the first, the guests took a 3-1 lead in the second on a pair of hits by Stefan Kolbe and Alex Aucoin. After Raef Hobbs-Brown struck out with the bases loaded in the fourth, Neuenburg added another run in the seventh to finalize the score. Alex Keprta (L 0-2) took the loss.
In the second game Saarlouis turned around an early 0-3 deficit to win 8-3, their first victory of the season. Neuenburg’s Moritz von der Breile hit a solo homerun and a RBI double. Tom Fiebig (W 1-1), Peter Ackermann and Michael Kratz pitched for the Hornets. The Atomics had Alex Aucoin (L 0-2), Pat Carlson and Andrea Girasole on the mound.
The doubleheader between the Gauting Indians and the Mannheim Tornados was postponed on Sunday morning due to snow.
