UGF Assicurazioni Bologna had a perfect start into the 2010 season of the new Italian Baseball League. Thanks to a strong start by Jesus Matos (W 1-0) they defeated the De Angelis Godo Knights 4-1. Matos allowed just two hits, an unearned run and a walk in seven innings, while striking out seven. Victor Moreno closed it out, retiring the final six batters in order.
Jairo Ramos had put Fortitudo in front driving in Livinston Santaniello with a RBI groundout in the opening frame. RBI singles by Juan Carlos Infante and Ramos, plus a passed ball put three more Bologna runs on the board in the fifth. The Knights avoided the shutout in the sixth, when Paolo Tanesini scored on an error by left fielder Stefano Landuzzi.
Godo’s Robert Palencia (L 0-1) got the starting nod, allowing five hits, four runs (3 ER) and four walks in five innings. Keith Ramsey pitched the remaining three innings. The two teams will meet once again in Bologna on Friday evening and close out the series on Saturday in Godo. The other six teams kick off the season tonight.
