Saarlouis Hornets facing Financial Problems

Posted on February 18, 2010February 18, 2010 by philipp

Saarlouis Hornets head coach Leo Vivona The German Baseball-Bundesliga club Saarlouis Hornets is apparently is facing financial problems. According to a report in a local newspaper they need to found money to continue playing first-division ball in 2011. The 2010 season seems to be secure. The article mentions €30,000 to €40,000, which the club would need to find somewhere to maintain a team in the Bundesliga next year.

The Hornets already have started a rigorous program to save money. For example they are no longer going to stay overnight on road trips and will use their own car for travel instead rentals. They are also looking to find new sponsors and would sell the naming rights of the team, which is quite common in European Baseball and Softball leagues.

Saarlouis finished in sixth place in the southern division of the Baseball-Bundesliga in 2009, winning eleven of 32 games (including playdowns). They missed the playoffs by two games. They are opening the season on April 4 and 5 in Heidenheim against reigning champion Heidekoepfe.
