The New York Yankees defeated the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday evening at Yankee Stadium 5-2 and won the best-of-seven American League Championship Series 4-2. With the victory the Bronx Bombers will return to the World Series after a six-year drought. It is their 40th trip to the fall classic and they hope to win for the 27th time in team history.
They will be opposed by defending champion Philadelphia Phillies, which won the National League pennant in five games against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Phillies won the title one year ago for the second time in six tries. They could become the first team since the 1998-2000 Yankees to win a World Series in back-to-back seasons.
The World Series starts on Wednesday evening at the Yankee Stadium in New York. ESPN America and MLB.tv will bring all seven games into the European homes, where Baseball fans have to stay up late or wake up early to catch the action.
