The 21-year-old Rien Vernooij got told by the New York Mets organization that they will terminate his contract and the corner infielder is going to return to the Netherlands. He will be playing for Neptunus, were he is part of the roster since 2008. After making his Hoofdklasse debut for Neptunus in 2006, he played 2007 for Sparta/Feyenoord Rotterdam.
The Mets signed Vernooij as an amateur free agent in August of 2007. He spent the last three years in professional baseball, splitting time between the Mets affiliates in the Venezuelan Summer League and the Gulf Coast League. He batted a combined .203 (OBP .275/SLG .275) with one homerun, 35 runs and 33 RBI in 111 games overall. He has 48 games under his belt in the Hoofdklasse.
