World Cup: Team USA starts exhibition schedule against Arizona Fall League with loss
Team USA started their exhibition games schedule against the Arizona Fall League with a loss. Peo Javelinas defeated them 8-6. It was the first of six games in preparation for the upcoming World Cup of Baseball. USA is placed in group A with Italy, Spain, Japan, Chinese Taipei, Mexico, Panama and South Africa. Their squad consists mostly of triple-a minor leaguers, some with major league experience.
Colby RASMUS (CF) led of, followed by Brian BIXLER (SS), Evan LONGORIA (3B), Delwyn YOUNG (DH), Steve PEARCE (1B), Justin RUGGIANO (RF), Jason JAMARILLO (C), Jayson NIX (2B) and Mike HOLLIMON (LF). BIXLER hit a homerun and had two RBI. RASMUS scored two runs.
YOUNG and Tyler COVLIN are battling sore arms and can not play in the outfield in the moment. Because of that, HOLLIMON, a career middle infielder, made his first ever start in left field.
Matt WRIGHT started for the squad. He pitched three innings, giving up three hits, one run and one walk. After that, six reliever came into the game.
Their next game is on Saturday. Jeff KARSTENS is slated as the starting pitcher.
