The 4th KFC World Cup of Softball began last Thursday in Oklahoma City with six teams. The Netherlands and Italy represent European colors in the tournament. Both teams opened the tournament with the Dutch squad winning 6-2 behind seven strikeouts in four innings by Kirsten Schelle. While the Netherlands lost game two on the first day against Jennie Finch’s eleven strikeouts and Team USA, Italy led 3-0 against Canada in the opening frame of their second match after a three-run homerun by Kaitlyn Gentile, when lightning stopped play and postponed it until Saturday morning.
On Friday the Dutch team lost 1-6 against Australia. Italy got shut out twice. At first by Team USA, which one-hit Italy in a 12-0 win. Later that day Japan also gave up just one hit in a 7-0 victory. The preliminary round continues thru Sunday with selected games being shown on ESPN America. Netherlands – Australia 1-6
Canada – Australia 3-2
