The Enbridge Northern Gateway World Baseball Challenge 2009 in Prince George, British Columbia begins on Thursday evening with a homerun derby at the Prince George Citizen Field. Jay Cook, Darren Doucette, Adam Norn, Brandon Hunter, Mike Collins, and one participant each from Germany (probably Dominik Wulf of the Solingen Alligators) and the Bahamas will battle for the $1,000 price check and the title “Players Bench Home Run Derby Champion”.
On Friday the tournament will kick off its regular schedule with the opener between host Prince George Axemen and the German National Team. The other teams are the Bahamas, Team USA (Collegiate), Team Canada and Team British Columbia. Originally Croatia, the Chinese Beijing Tigers and Taiwan also were supposed to participate, but withdraw from the event in the last couple of weeks. Especially for Germany the World Baseball Challenge is a big test in front of the 38th IBAF Baseball World Cup in September.
