The Californian Whitney Pierce joins the SAARLOUIS HORNETS for the upcoming season. The 27-year-old, who was part of the Baltimore Orioles organization between 2002 and 2004, joins the Baseball-Bundesliga club after having played for the Swiss team REUSSBUEHL EAGLES in 2007 and the Dutch Hoofdklasse club RCH MEDIAMONKS last year. During the 2008 campaign in the Netherlands Pierce batted .191 (SLG .281) with eleven runs scored and twelve RBI in 25 games, splitting time behind the plate and at first. He will be used as a catcher and third baseman with the HORNETS.
